Water Travels in a Cycle, Yes it Does!

Around and around and around and around and around it goes!! The water cycle is amazing! We are rocking and rolling in first grade, learning all about evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. To explore this phenomenom, we of course experimented! Thank you Pinterest! Water cycle in a cup. Check out the pics! So we started with water in a cup the day before, dyed blue (because obviously water is blue!). After marking the level of water, we set the cups outside and hoped for evaporation! Later....the next day. We began our cycle experiement. Making observations.   Recording our observations! Then we added clouds (shaving cream). And dropped drops of "rain" (food coloring) onto the clouds and waited...... Thanks to patience, a lot of food coloring, and of course gravity - our water cycles in a cup started to rain! It was so cool!!  Today was ALSO the 100th day!!  Hooray! We made it!   We made 100th day hats with 10 strips and then we put 10 different item...

We all Love in the Same Color: Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day!

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we read books and did a great activity to reinforce the amazing contributions this man has given to the world.  We started by reading this book.  It's such a great book to introduce MLK to the kiddos because it's simple language, colorful pictures, and kids can relate to the story.  Then we talked about our differences as a class. The kids looked at each other and told one or two things that they liked about their classmate and how the differences made them a great person.  They held out their arms and talked about different colors and how that made everyone special and unique!! Then we did an activity from First Grade Wow! Great stuff over there!!   I brought in a lot of different apples and talked about how they were different on the outside.  Then I cut the apples in half so we could see the insides - there were all the same! And bonus - each one has a star inside, just like each of us! To finish the lesson e...

That's No Moon, That's an Oreo!!

Hey all!! We have been super busy speeding through January!! Can you believe that it is already the end of the first month f the new year?? Crazy! Anyhoo, we are nearing the end of our unit "Reasons for the Seasons" and we have been studying the phases of the moon! For all of our units, we have what we call CRLGs (criterion referenced learning guides). Seen above. Click the pic for a copy. We observe the moon and discuss patterns and day and night. We had a little fun with some oreos, too! They loved it!! YUMMY!!! Check out Nasa's Space Place page to grab a copy of the activity for yourself! Onto MLK and the 100th day!! Happy Teaching :)

Mardi Gras Madness!!!!!!! Math mini unit on Ten More and Ten Less

Happy Mardi Gras! Here in Louisiana we are big on Carnival Season! Four days in and I'm so excited for the coming weeks! We have been hard at work in first grade getting ready for second grade! I haven't had much time for much of anything else other than school work and Carly Summer. Who knew 8th grade was so much work?? Loving every minute of it though!!!!! Anyways..... In honor of this fun time, I've created a math mini unit for finding 10 more and 10 less inspired by Mardi Gras. This unit has 5 days of lesson plans on finding 10 more and 10 less. Each day includes whole group lesson plan, small group lesson plan with ideas for enrichment and remediation, center activities (not day 5), exit tickets, and recording pages. There is also a summative assessment for analyzing student achievement of the unit. Day 1: Place Value Parade (2 center activities) Day 2: Mardi Gras Go Round Day 3: Block Party Missing Numbers Day 4: Unmasking Numbers/Clue de Lis (2 center activities) Day...
