Happy Valentine's Day! And Mardi Gras!! Cookies and Math

Loving that Mardi Gras is upon us! I've been crazy busy getting things ready  for next week since we've only got three days of school. And I'm heading home so I've got packing to do as well! Phew! Time sure flies when you don't want it to! I made some cookies for the parade. Learn how to make the masks at the end of this post :) And Valentine's Day. In a different twist to my usual posting, I wanted to share my fantastic cookie recipe with you. It's been the BEST SUGAR COOKIE IN THE WORLD. No lie. Seriously. The. Best. Now I've been making cookies for quite some time now, and I've tried many, many, many recipes but the trick comes from what works for YOU. Weather has a crazy effect on food, heating, cooling, opening the oven door too many times, etc. Anyway, here is the recipe I use that I have perfected over the years: This makes about 3 dozen cookies, depending on how thick you roll the dough. 1 1/2 cup butter, room temperature (3 sticks) 2 cups su...

Mardi Gras Madness!!!!!!! Math mini unit on Ten More and Ten Less

Happy Mardi Gras! Here in Louisiana we are big on Carnival Season! Four days in and I'm so excited for the coming weeks! We have been hard at work in first grade getting ready for second grade! I haven't had much time for much of anything else other than school work and Carly Summer. Who knew 8th grade was so much work?? Loving every minute of it though!!!!! Anyways..... In honor of this fun time, I've created a math mini unit for finding 10 more and 10 less inspired by Mardi Gras. This unit has 5 days of lesson plans on finding 10 more and 10 less. Each day includes whole group lesson plan, small group lesson plan with ideas for enrichment and remediation, center activities (not day 5), exit tickets, and recording pages. There is also a summative assessment for analyzing student achievement of the unit. Day 1: Place Value Parade (2 center activities) Day 2: Mardi Gras Go Round Day 3: Block Party Missing Numbers Day 4: Unmasking Numbers/Clue de Lis (2 center activities) Day...

MARDI GRAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And a Math Activity :)

Yessiree, it is that time of year!!!! Mardi Gras!! I LOVE this season. Everything is purple, gold, and green. Everyone is prepping for parades and balls and eating King Cake and it's just great!! I am so excited for my Krewe's ball coming up on February 8th.  My guests are my friends Jessica and Mike and Anna. Of course sharing the table with my BFF Amanda and her guests Jolie, Snooks, and Raven. I might be missing some peoples, but with this lineup we are gonna have a BLAST!!! The theme is Circus!!!!!!!!!!! This is my 7th year in my Krewe and my 3rd year dressing up in costume rather than gown. My costume is: Made it myself :) And I made this little Mardi Gras Activity myself as well. It's about place value to the 100s.  Students match the feathers to the numbers on the mask. I've included 28 sets of feathers and masks. Students look at the number on the mask and match it with the feathers in expanded form.  E.g. 235=200+30+5 I've also included a template for a ma...
